Coolest Things You Need to do When Visiting London
London is one of the oldest and most diverse cities in the world. There are bed and breakfasts here that predate the American Revolution. We actually stayed in one where the date of 1642 was burned into one of the beams. Having said that, that means is there is a lot to see and do here. London has always been one of the cities that is a must see. It has been a financial and cultural center for Europe for hundreds of years. Whether you are visiting for the nightlife, or the shopping, or just the historical, London truly has something for everyone. Here are a few of the must-sees.
The British Museum
This is a must-see, even if you are not a museum person. It would like be going to Washington and not seeing the Smithsonian. They only ever show a very small percentage of what they have, but it is one of the most magnificent museums in the world. I would avoid the coffee shop though, you are better served to eat at a much more foodie destination and there are many nearby.
The Tower of London
Ok, this is touristy, but, it is still very cool. It is a must-see for once in your life. Just seeing the crown jewels is amazing. The world’s largest diamond and the world’s most expensive diamond are things to remember. Really there are more things to see at the tower of London, but the crown jewels are, shall we say, the crown jewel.
Westminster Abby
It’s one of the most famous churches in England, and where the royals get married. It is something that must be seen, even if touristy, it is still a working and active church. Saint Pauls is another church that is worth the visit. The stained glass and medieval decorations are what make it an amazing place.
Portobello Road Market
Much more fun is the Portobello Road Market; there are many tourists but also a lot of locals. There are more than a thousand merchants (really!) and you can buy almost anything in its colorful and flea market feel on this road. Saturday is the day to go, as that is when it’s in full swing, while the other days are a lot quieter. Also be careful of pickpockets, they are almost as famous here as the market itself.
Piccadilly Circus and the West End
Piccadilly Circus is the entrance to the West End and is not an actual circus, it is a circle. Basically, this is like Times Square with more shopping. It opens into the west end, where there is a great theater district. We can strongly suggest taking the day out and spending it in this area. Shop, eat, theater, drink, and home, is about as great a night as you can have in our world.
London food tour
Though people often criticize the English for bland food, they really have no idea. London is one of the culinary capitals of the world as well. We suggest a food tour to bring out that inner foodie and really see what eating in London is all about. After that, you can take that pub crawl and finish off the day.
Also, don’t forget to ride a London Hop on Hop off bus and enjoy everything this wonderful city has to offer. You will get to see the most important sights in all of London in a fun way. Remember to bring your camera too!
London is an amazing place, and really there is nowhere near enough room here to list all the things you should do. There are hundreds. Attractions? Hundreds! Churches? Hundreds! Culture? Hundreds! So go and do some of the main ones first, then when you have your feet wet, do some research and take your time and enjoy.
